know the signs

what is a dental emergency?

Essentially, a dental emergency is any situation that is causing you pain that you can’t treat on your own. These situations include teeth that have fallen out or become loose in an injury, severe pain or excessive bleeding, and past dental work (like fillings or crowns) that have fallen out or become loose. If you are experiencing any of these issues, call or visit us immediately for quality dental care.

WhAt Counts As

A DENTAL EMERGENCY?

At Horizon Dental, we use two simple criteria to determine whether or not you’re experiencing a dental emergency. A dental emergency is an oral condition that:

  • is causing you immediate pain or discomfort or is bleeding excessively
  • you cannot treat or fix on your own

An oral injury such as a cracked tooth, for example, fits this definition of a dental emergency, as do other types of dental injuries like knocked-out (avulsed) teeth, chipped teeth, and lacerations to the gums, lips, and tongue.

However, oral injuries are not the only kind of dental emergency. A serious toothache, an advanced case of periodontal disease, or dental work that has been pulled-out or knocked-out is also considered an emergency. If you’re not sure whether or not you’re experiencing an emergency, contact Horizon Dental for an appointment with Dr. Dan or to speak with our knowledgable team.

Be Prepared

What To Do With A Knocked Out Tooth

  • The first thing you need to do is recover your tooth and wash it gently with warm water.
  • Then, replace the tooth in your socket, if possible. If not, put it in a small bag or container of cold milk.
  • Contact Horizon Dental right away to let us know that you are coming in for an emergency appointment. For your tooth to be re-implanted successfully, you need to have it replaced within 1-2 hours.
  • Before you come in, you can also take some steps to treat pain, bleeding, and discomfort. Use clean gauze or cotton balls to absorb blood, and most bleeding should stop within about an hour. If you want, you can also take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or naproxen (Advil) to help with your pain. An external ice pack can also be used to help reduce swelling and pain.

Get Out Of Pain Fast

The Importance of Immediate Emergency Care

Immediate care helps you get relief from your pain and discomfort. An oral injury like a cracked tooth can be absolutely excruciating, but at Horizon Dental we offer sedation and powerful numbing agents to provide you with relief, and we take the appropriate steps to restore your tooth efficiently.

Getting treatment right after an emergency also helps reduce the risk of further complications. If your tooth is cracked, for example, it could become infected if you do not get treatment for it right away.

If you’ve experienced a dental emergency, come in to see Dr. Dan at Horizon Dental as soon as possible to minimize your pain and discomfort, and get the treatment you need to fix your smile. Give us a call at (980) 389-6753 or come to our office for an emergency walk-in appointment now.

we Get you out of pain and keep you calm with

sedation dentistry

When patients come in for emergency care and they are experiencing severe pain, we offer sedation dentistry to minimize discomfort and keep you safe and calm during your treatment. Laughing gas is inhaled during treatment and gives you feelings of euphoria and relaxation. The effects of laughing gas wear off quickly, so you are able to drive yourself home after your appointment, if necessary.

Does it hurt

to have my tooth pulled?

No. During the tooth extraction process, you won’t feel any pain or discomfort. This is because Dr. Dan will use numbing spray and a numbing needle to anesthetize the treatment area. The nerves around your tooth will be blocked from feeling any kind of sensation, including pain.

We also offer sedation dentistry, so if you’re feeling nervous or anxious about your procedure and want to remain comfortable, the team at Horizon Dental is here for you. We offer both laughing gas and pill-based oral sedation.

It’s important to note, however, that you will feel some pain and discomfort as your mouth heals after your procedure. Once your sedation and numbing wear off, you will need to take the proper steps to deal with this pain.

Dr. Dan will give you a set of recovery instructions to follow after your procedure, so make sure to follow them closely. Usually, you’ll be able  to resume your day-to-day activities within a day or two, and your pain levels will continue to drop over time.

Should I replace

My missing tooth?

Yes. Unless you’ve had a wisdom tooth pulled, you need to replace your missing tooth as soon as possible. There are a few reasons for this. First, your ability to eat your favorite foods and speak clearly may be affected, especially if you’ve had multiple teeth pulled.

You may also feel self-conscious about your appearance if you’re missing one or more of your front teeth. Replacing your teeth will help you eat normally, speak clearly, and feel more confident about how you look.

Replacing missing teeth also helps prevent oral health issues, such as teeth shifting after tooth loss. When you lose a tooth, the teeth next to it will try to shift toward the empty socket and fill it, which can cause problems with your oral health and bite alignment.

At Horizon Dental, we offer a few different methods of tooth replacement. Partial dentures are a good short-term solution. They consist of one or more false teeth in a denture base that clips onto your remaining healthy teeth, restoring your smile.

Dental bridges are another option. A bridge consists of two dental crowns and one or more false teeth. The crowns attach to healthy teeth in your mouth, and the false teeth “bridge” the gap where 1, 2, or more adjacent missing teeth used to be.

However, the best solution for replacing your missing teeth in Charlotte is a dental implant. Implants use a two-part design that imitates the natural anatomy of your tooth. A small metal post is surgically implanted into your gums and jaw. Then, it heals and bonds permanently with your jaw bone, and a dental crown can be attached to the implant to restore your tooth.

Implants are the best choice because they can last 30+ years, they require no special care, and they also help strengthen your jawbone, unlike bridges or partial dentures. Learn more and see if you’re a candidate by contacting Horizon Dental for a consultation now.
