skilled implant surgery
placing dental implants
Once you have had a consultation with Dr. Dan Hostrander to determine that your gums and jawbone are healthy enough to support dental implants, your treatment will begin. During the placement process, a small, titanium post will be surgically inserted into your gum line through to your jawbone. Once this heals, the post will act as an artificial tooth root to hold your custom-made restoration.
The finishing touches
The restoration process begins once your dental implant is completely healed in your jawbone. At Horizon Dental, we offer custom-made dental crowns as a restoration options. These crowns are made to be a perfect fit, blending in with the rest of your smile and looking and feeling completely natural. Dr. Dan will attach your crown to your dental implant, and you’ll leave our office with a brand new smile!

Do Dental Implants Last?
Dental implants will usually last you for the rest of your life as long as you follow Dr. Dan’s instructions as you heal and recover from surgery, and you continue to maintain high standards of oral hygiene during the years to come. More than 90% of all dental implants last at least 30 years.
However, it’s important to note that we’re discussing the lifespan of the dental implant itself here, meaning the small piece of titanium that is implanted into your jaw bone. This implant essentially becomes part of your natural jaw tissue, so there’s no reason it should fail as long as it heals properly, and it will last forever.
This is not necessarily true of your implant restoration, like a dental crown. Unlike the implant itself, your crown will be exposed to wear & tear, just like your natural teeth. Over time, it may begin to wear down and fail, or even come loose from its attachment to your dental implant.
Your restoration may need to be replaced every 10-20 years. The best way to make sure your restoration stays in good shape is to see Dr. Dan for an appointment every six months. He will check the health of your remaining natural teeth, and also inspect your implant to make sure the implant and implant-supported restoration are in good shape.
Am I A Candidate
For A Dental Implant?
As long as your mouth is healthy and free of gum disease, and your jaw bone is strong enough to accommodate a dental implant, you are likely a good candidate for dental implants. If your jaw is weak due to bone resorption after tooth loss, you may still be able to get dental implants, but will likely require bone grafting surgery before treatment to restore your jaw bone.

What Kind Of Aftercare Is Needed
For A Dental Implant?
Immediately after your initial dental implant surgery, you will need to take a few steps to make sure that your mouth heals properly. Dr. Dan will provide you with a comprehensive list of steps to take.
You’ll need to do things like avoid too much heavy exertion for a few days after your appointment, eating mostly soft foods for a little while after your surgery, and gently clean your implant site to reduce the risk of infection. It usually takes between 1-2 weeks to completely recover from your initial dental implant surgery.
After this, you can resume your normal diet and brush normally until you get your dental implant restoration about 3-6 months after your initial surgery. And there’s even more good news. Once your implant is restored with a dental crown, you can treat it just like a natural tooth.
There is no long recovery period after your implant is completed with a dental crown, and you don’t need to take any special care precautions. For all intents and purposes, it’s a natural tooth, and you should treat it that way by brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and coming to Horizon Dental every six months for an oral exam and teeth cleaning.
