The Basics

Understanding Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are a type of dental prosthesis used to restore damaged teeth. Crowns are designed to look and feel just like a natural tooth, and they are intended to cover up your remaining enamel, all the way down to the gum line.
Crowns ensure that your remaining enamel is protected from oral trauma, tooth decay, and other dental issues. Crowns are usually used to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay or oral trauma. They are also typically used to cover up teeth after root canals, and can also be used for cosmetic dentistry purposes, in some cases.

What To Expect

The Crown Placement Process

Having a dental crown placed at Horizon Dental typically takes two appointments. At your first appointment, Dr. Dan will clean and numb your mouth, then prepare your tooth. Any remaining damaged enamel will be removed and the tooth will be trimmed to provide a stable platform for the crown. Next, he will take dental impressions and images of your teeth, and send these to a trusted dental lab where your crown will be made.

It takes about 2-3 weeks to make your permanent crown, so you’ll be sent home with a temporary crown in the meantime. When your permanent crown arrives at our office, we’ll check it for proper fit. Once your crown looks and feels how you want it, Dr. Dan will bond it to your tooth permanently with dental cement. Finally, the crown will be polished to ensure it matches your surrounding natural teeth.

How Do Dental Bridges Work?

Dental crowns are key components of dental bridges. Bridges consist of two crowns which are attached to healthy “abutment” teeth adjacent to a missing tooth. These two crowns support a false tooth (also called a pontic) which is suspended between them. This tooth literally bridges the gap and replaces your missing tooth.

The bridge placement process is quite similar to having two crowns placed. Your teeth will be trimmed and impressions and images will be taken of your teeth. Then, you’ll get temporary crowns to protect them, and you’ll come back in a few weeks when your permanent bridge arrives. Bridges may require multiple follow-ups to refine the shape and ensure a perfect, proper fit.
